Museum of Design Atlanta Presents

Serving Form by Atlanta Artist and Designer Kristofer Laméy

October 1 – 30, 2010

Atlanta (July 20, 2010) – Concurrently with Atlanta Design Week (October 23 through 30), the Museum of Design Atlanta welcomes Atlanta artist and designer Kristofer Laméy for a special showing of new and collected works throughout the month of October. Laméy’s “Serving Form” features sculptural light and multi-use furniture created from materials like aluminum alloy, Baltic birch, rare earth magnets and LED lights.

The show will run October 1 through 30, and Laméy will be present daily during Atlanta Design Week October 26 through 30 for live demonstrations. The demonstration schedule will be available at www.museumofdesign.org.

Laméy works intimately with the properties of each material he chooses in order to create a unified, lasting and irreducible form. In this way, each piece becomes a part of the whole, and each element supports the others in a relaxed state. A single completed lighting sculpture may include from 12 to 1,000 custom-made parts, which house bulbs and LED lights connected to a low-volt current, making illuminated, eye-popping works.

“I ask two basic questions of any serving form,” says Laméy. “‘Does it meet my needs? If so, is the quality of the form going to last for a lifetime?’ If the answer is ‘yes’ to both, then as a designer, I believe I am creating something that is truly sustainable.” Laméy drafts, cuts and molds each part, then hand finishes them before adding them into the overall design of the piece. “Serving Form is a term I use to make sense of the objects in my environment that I use every day,” he says. “I challenge viewers to examine the relationship that they have with objects in his or her life and ask whether the forms around them are serving or being served.”

Atlanta, GA ...Kristofer Laméy creates one- of- a- kind pieces that can best be described as works of art generated through industrial design. His work is made of glass, metal and light; and each creation is a serving form for his client’s space. His works serve both his client’s personality and their individual space.

‘I am guided first by the perimeter of the client’s space, then I imagine a form, and design from the inside out. Logically built, emotionally expressed.” Laméy said.

After the original concept is formed, he generates the actual design in Auto-CAD, and then utilizes computer controlled machinery to achieve perfect fits.

“The latest in C & C technology is necessary to produce the high level of quality within the project’s deadlines,” Laméy said.

Each piece takes approximately two to nine months to complete from concept to completion, and range in price from $20,000 to $90,000. An average of seven people are involved in the entire process and only three to five pieces are made per year.

Kristofer’s client base is varied, and he has sold pieces both in the Atlanta area and overseas. For the past 14 months, his work has been commissioned and sold in Paris.

“Atlanta is where my network is and where the work is done, however, the majority of my marketing efforts are outside the United States,” Laméy said.

Laméy’s pieces are designed with sustainability in mind. The size of the carbon foot print per project is kept to a minimum. If need be, the elements of any piece could be recycled back to their natural state; and all work is repairable if damaged.

“My work is an indigenous product of the southeast United States. The processes in fabricating the work and the people involved are all here in Atlanta. I want people to know that international quality can be found right here in Atlanta,” Laméy said.

Kristofer lives in his Castleberry Hill studio with his wife, Jenna, and their newborn son, Augustus. He can be contacted during business hours at 404-323-2635 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 404-323-2635 end_of_the_skype_highlighting or via email: work@kristoferlamey.com.
